The Little Mermaid (2023)- Atlantica

The Little Mermaid (2023) - Atlantica
A few early production design pieces created back in late 2019 for Atlantica during my time in the Disney Art Department.
I worked closely alongside both Production Designer, John Myhre and Art Director, Kim Frederiksen to create the journey following Ariel's sisters, journeying through Atlantica to the Throne Room. A film noir style was used to help convey and better understand the scale of the city, layering the coral assets to form distant 'districts'. Unfortunately, the final production was cut short so a lot of this journey did not get featured.
I worked predominantly in Maya, using Zbrush and Houdini to support the coral asset creation. The scene and animations were also used for concept art to create key art from. As the turnaround for iterations was so quick, rendering out of Maya viewport 2.0 was the best solution.

A lot of attention was spent on the composition of the coral leading up to the Throne Room.

A slice of the initial reveal and journey into Atlantica.

The final approach to the Throne Room. We tried to push the scale of the coral as much as we could to convey the epicness of the city.

A part of the journey visible in the final cut.

The Throne Room was a combination of natural coral reference with a Gaudi inspiration.
